Nintendo DS can be easily and legally modded without firmware moddification.
Nowadays DS modding is done trough Slot-1 devices
Once the DS card encryption was broken, it became possible to design cards that boot and read directly from slot 1. This meant that pass through devices or flashed firmware were no longer needed to read from an external storage device and led to a wide proliferation of various 'all-in-one' 'plug-n-play' cards.
This cards are like micro-sdcard adapter to DS, you put the firmware of the cart inside the micro sd card so as games, and homebrew stuff.
The most used is the R4 card, it is hard to know which one is the original, most say R4ds.com is the original but its firmware is discontinued.
The other is R4dsl.net, this still updates firmware and has anti-fake page and it is sold on stores.
However there are more brands and better than R4 like EZFlash V and M3.
With an R4 type card you can run on the DS:
- Homebrew applications
- Homebrew emulators (like Gnesis, SMS, MAME)
- Homebrew games (like Quake II, and others)
- Multimedia apps like Moonshell (comes with the card firmware)
- You can use your DS as PC controller
- DS rooms (games) this part is ilegal if you dont own an original copy of the game _________________

I love the R4 card and found it to be so simple my 10 year old kid can work it, good price and the new line of R4 cards can use the SD HC cards so you can fit even more on the card. _________________ T3CH SVN BUILD update guide

Yes, you dont have to risk you console firmware anymore, just copy the files to card however some games and homebrews need to be patched or manualy modified to work in the card you have.
But basically, you can only start with a slot1 card like R4 _________________

That card is exactly the same as mine, if you check the list there more R4 cards some even more cheaper but that's the one you should buy.
That one works great and the developers still update the firmware plus all the files I will upload will be already patched for working on it _________________

So do you just load a backup of one of your games and run it like a normal game? Do you need anything special in slot 1 or 2?

sad story but here it goes:
i decided to purchase a nintendo DSi for my 5 yr old, but how wrong was I, now not only did i pay $200 bucks but i had to buy her a game as well.
so i decided to go with MarioKart DS which was 35.99 here at gamestop. well to make the story short dont know why she took the game off the system "blame the mother for teachin her how to take it off " but she was able to break the cute game in two pieces hehe funny right! well for this reason i would like to know how to run backups of my games on the ds! _________________ HQ Lord Nikon 1b4

Place the backup in a folder of your slot 1 card (like R4)
Then when you turn on the R4 has a dashboard like Xbox, you just have to choose the game and start.
You may need to patch or even crack some games before be able to play them _________________

Some of the newer games need patching but not many, ive got over 500+ games and only 5 ive had to patch myself, and that very simple as well, most of the time whoever copies the game has already patched it.
the newer R4 cards firmware even have a patch enabling device so if a game dont play you just press 'patch' and its done :)

The patch is to make the compatibly with your card, so if the ripper has your card you wont have to patch it.
However some games like Zelda need to be cracked. _________________
